Trek built its first carbon fiber frame in 1985 but due to the low quality produced by the outsource manufacturer, the first carbon fiber bike was recalled after a year. This important valuable lesson taught Trek to take its manufacturing process in house to ensure quality. In 1992, Trek introduced their first fully carbon frame bikes using their “Optimum Compaction, Low Void” (OCLV) process. This OCLV process of making carbon fiber was said to exceed even the quality expected by aerospace industries. In 1995, Trek unveiled the full suspension Y bike which took the cycling world by storm. The Y bike defied the traditional design of bicycle and was very popular with consumers.
Trek sponsored the United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team in 1997. They even signed former world road race champion, Lance Armstrong. Armstrong used a stocked Trek 5500 to won the Tour de France in 1999. In 1998, Trek set up Advanced Components Group (ACG) to concentrate on improving the technologies of cycling. Through their sponsored riders, they are able to experiment and test the latest technologies and bring it to mass consumers.
